Opening 125 years ago The Atlantic Hotel has retained many of its original features such as the glamourous marbled entrance to its historic sweeping staircase and chandeliers. Another original feature is that the original building is built of granite, meaning traditional fire cable installation would be almost impossible. Luckily for the hotel, life safety installers Action Fire Southwest had a magic trick up their sleeve, Hochiki’s hybrid wireless range of devices - Ekho, to ensure this iconic building was safe for its staff and guests.

 

Recognising the existing life safety system needed a complete upgrade, Andrew Berry owner of Action Fire Southwest said

“This project was a big one, we had close to 200 devices to install, and with the size of the building and the fact that the hotel was made of granite meant that cabling was going to be tricky so we knew we needed to use wireless devices. Wireless is quicker to install minimising the impact on the hotel, we knew that Hochiki’s Ekho devices were the best for the job because they are incredibly quick and easy to install.”

 

With over 100,000 people visiting Newquay during the summer months, getting this installation completed on time was crucial for the hotel to not miss its peak trading season. The project was scheduled to start in February and was completed in just a few short weeks.

 

Hochiki Systems Sales Manager, Martin Green consulted on this project and visited the hotel alongside the team at Action Fire Southwest to carry out detailed surveys.

“The last two years have been incredibly hard for the hotel industry, so I wanted to make sure for the end client we got this job done efficiently with minimal impact on their business and guests. After the initial site visit and carrying out the project survey we knew our wireless Ekho devices would be the perfect solution. They were each fitted in minutes within the individual hotel spaces and bedrooms with no on-site programming required, as this had been carried out way in advance off-site. So, it really was as simple as getting the device out of its box, attaching it in place and the system was good to go”.

 

Andrew Berry adds: 
“There were a few hotel guests during the install, but we were able to work around them and get the job done quickly – this was one of the main concerns for the hotel, that those guests were not to be disrupted and there was to be zero impact on peak trading. Working with Hochiki devices meant we were able to achieve this”.

Voice Command Evacuation System
In many public buildings, there may be dozens of different types of audible warning devices; fire alarm systems, emergency exit alarms, lifts/elevators, intrusion alarm systems, and each can have their own audible warning device.

 

With so many different types of audible devices, it can be confusing to the occupants when an alarm sound – especially for hotel guests who might be fast asleep in their rooms. Is it a real fire alarm or a false alarm? To counter these conflicting responses, voice sounders are now an established and effective solution. Research has shown that voice alarm messages result in quicker reaction times than when sirens or bells are used, in fact 75% of people react in a timely manner to voice messages. This has resulted in VA Systems becoming more commonplace as the primary means of evacuation in public buildings.

 

As part of the install at The Atlantic Hotel, staff training was provided on how the new system and devices operated, and what to expect when an alarm sounded.

“The Ekho devices we prescribed have an additional feature of voice messaging, which can be critical during an emergency in a hotel as people tend to respond quickly when they hear a voice command to exit the building. The hotel management were very keen to take up this additional voice functionality built into Ekho, so they now have a fully functioning, voice evacuation system".

 

Following the completion of the installation and commissioning process, along with the device training, the team from Action Fire Southwest now visit the site on a six-monthly basis for ongoing maintenance as well as to update new staff on the system and devices.

 

Andrew Berry says he would happily recommend Hochiki on future customer projects.

Inaugurato 125 anni fa, l'Hotel Atlantic ha conservato molte delle sue caratteristiche originali, come il maestoso ingresso in marmo, la storica scalinata e i lampadari d'epoca.

Un aspetto originale è che l'edificio è costruito completamente in granito, il che rende l'installazione di cavi antincendio tradizionali praticamente impossibile. L'azienda installatrice Action Fire Southwest ha ovviato facilmente al problema scegliendo per questo progetto la gamma di dispositivi ibridi wireless Ekho di Hochiki.

 

Il sistema antincendio dell'hotel necessitava di un aggiornamento completo, Andrew Berry, titolare di Action Fire Southwest, ha dichiarato:

 

"Questo progetto si è dimostrato subito molto impegnativo, dovevamo installare quasi 200 dispositivi e, date le dimensioni dell'edificio e il fatto che la struttura fosse in granito, il cablaggio risultava difficile, avevamo l'esigenza di utilizzare dispositivi wireless. Il wireless è più veloce da installare e riduce al minimo l'impatto sull'hotel. Sapevamo che i dispositivi Ekho di Hochiki sono i migliori, incredibilmente veloci e facili da installare".

 

Con oltre 100.000 persone che visitano Newquay durante i mesi estivi, completare l'installazione in tempo era fondamentale per non perdere l'alta stagione commerciale dell'hotel. Il progetto è stato completato in poche settimane.

 

Martin Green, System Sales Manager di Hochiki è stato il consulente per questo progetto e ha visitato l'hotel insieme al team di Action Fire Southwest per effettuare sopraluoghi dettagliati.

 

"Gli ultimi due anni sono stati incredibilmente duri per il settore alberghiero, quindi volevo assicurarmi che il cliente riuscisse a portare a termine questo lavoro in modo efficiente, con un impatto minimo sulla sua attività dell'hotel e sui suoi ospiti. Dopo il sopraluogo iniziale e la stesura del progetto, abbiamo capito che i nostri dispositivi wireless Ekho erano la soluzione perfetta. Possono essere installati in pochi minuti all'interno dei singoli spazi e delle camere dell'hotel, già precedentemente programmati. L'installazione è statta davvero semplice, il sistema e' stato avviato in un attimo".

 

Andrew Berry aggiunge:

"Durante l'installazione alcuni ospiti erano presenti in hotel, ma siamo stati in grado di lavorare ugualmente senza intoppi e di portare a termine il lavoro rapidamente: questa era una delle principali richieste dell'hotel, minimo disturbo per gli ospiti e nessun impatto sulle attività. La collaborazione con Hochiki ci ha permesso di raggiungere questo obiettivo".

 

Sistema di evacuazione a comando vocale
In molti edifici pubblici possono essere presenti decine di differenti tipi di dispositivi di allarme acustico: sistemi di allarme antincendio, allarmi per le uscite di emergenza, ascensori, sistemi di allarme antintrusione, e ognuno può avere il proprio segnale di allarme acustico.

 

Con tanti tipi diversi di dispositivi, il suono di un allarme può confondere gli occupanti, soprattutto gli ospiti dell'hotel che potrebbero essere addormentati nelle loro stanze. Si tratta di un vero allarme o di un falso allarme? Per contrastare queste reazioni contraddittorie, i segnalatori vocali sono ormai una soluzione consolidata ed efficace. Le ricerche hanno dimostrato che i messaggi di allarme vocali determinano tempi di reazione più rapidi rispetto all'uso di sirene o campane, infatti il 75% delle persone reagisce in modo tempestivo ai messaggi vocali. 

 

Nell'ambito dell'installazione presso l'Hotel Atlantic, il personale ha ricevuto una formazione sul funzionamento del nuovo sistema e su cosa aspettarsi in caso di allarme.

"I dispositivi Ekho hanno una funzione aggiuntiva di messaggistica vocale, che può essere fondamentale durante un'emergenza in un hotel, poiché le persone tendono a rispondere rapidamente quando sentono un comando vocale per uscire dall'edificio. La direzione dell'hotel si è dimostrata interessata a sfruttare questa funzionalità vocale aggiuntiva, per cui ora dispone di un sistema di evacuazione vocale pienamente funzionante".

 

Dopo il completamento dell'installazione e messa in funzione, il team di Action Fire Southwest si reca ora in loco con cadenza semestrale per la manutenzione e per aggiornare il nuovo personale sul sistema e sui dispositivi.

 

Andrew Berry afferma che consiglierebbe volentieri Hochiki per futuri progetti.

 

"Collaboro con Hochiki dal 2011 e ho un ottimo rapporto con il mio referente di zona, mi fido di Hochiki, il team sa consigliarmi il meglio per ogni progetto. Il team di assistenza tecnica, nelle rare occasioni in cui ne ho bisogno, non è secondo a nessuno. Direi che 9 volte su 10 Hochiki è il mio produttore di riferimento.
